Learning About Adoption

Over 100,000 children are adopted by American families each year. Although many people know someone who adopted a child, the adoption process is still mysterious and plagued by many misconceptions. Here’s a basic overview.

Research
This first stage is perhaps the most important. You’ll want to read, inquire, and consider as much information as you can gather from adoption professionals, adoptive families, and others available sources. Our agency offers public adoption information meetings lead by experienced staff and adoptive parents. Or you may choose to schedule a private appointment, via phone conference or in person, with one of our adoption specialists.

Pre-Placement
In this stage, you will select a licensed adoption agency or professional in your home state to prepare your home study and assist with other applications and procedures necessary for the specific type of adoption you have chosen to pursue. When your paperwork is complete, the waiting period begins and lasts until you are finally matched with a child and placement of that child is made into your care. We can provide all your pre-placement services up to and including the placement of a child into your home. We are also able to work in conjunction with another agency of your choice to provide a portion of the pre-placement services such as your home study.

Post-Placement
This is the final stage of adoption during which time A) you are required to fulfill a specified number of post-placement reports prepared by a licensed agency social worker from your home state, and B) your adoption may be finalized by the courts. We can provide all your post-placement services through our regional New England offices or through our partner agencies in the Lutheran Adoption Network.

Our agency stays connected and available to your family throughout the lifelong journey of adoption with our Post-Adoption Resource Center programs and services. We look forward to helping your family grow and thrive together.
