LSS FAMILY PARTICIPATES IN
2007 ADOPTIVE FAMILY PORTRAIT PROJECT

adoption

In celebration of National Adoption Awareness Month (November), the Adoptive Family Portrait Project seeks to raise awareness about the experiences of families that adopt waiting children from foster care.

This year’s project focuses on the role that post-adoption services play in making it possible for families to adopt children with special needs and for adoptive families to provide the stability and permanence that their children need.

Voice For Adoption, the national nonprofit organization which heads the project annually, asks members of Congress to participate by displaying a photo of a constituent family that has adopted children from foster care. Each participating Congressional office is provided with information about the family’s adoption experience and how federal child welfare programs have affected the family, along with a family portrait to hang in their legislative office during the month of November.

This year, the Wimmer Family of Connecticut was selected as the representative family for their state. Through their participation, families in the Adoptive Family Portrait Project are given the opportunity to help raise awareness and understanding in Congress about adoption from foster care by sharing their personal adoption experiences.

Voice for Adoption launched the 2007 Adoptive Family Portrait Project with a reception on Capitol Hill in October. Family portraits were delivered to Congressional offices to be displayed through November in celebration of National Adoption Awareness Month. This year’s project received a wonderful response with 56 members of Congress signing up to participate by featuring a photo in their Washington, DC, office of a constituent family that has adopted from foster care. By sharing family photos and personal adoption experiences and stories, the project helps to put a real face on the issue of adoption and the need for permanent families for waiting children.

Voice For Adoption is a national nonprofit organization devoted to developing and advocating for improved adoption policies. VFA works closely with federal and state legislators, and other child welfare organizations, to make a difference in the lives of the 114,000 children in foster care who are waiting to be adopted and the families who adopt children from foster care.
