Transracial Adoption

In this letter from father to daughter, a grandpa shares his inner most feelings about his adopted Asian grandchildren.

Dear Sheri,

I met a new member of our congregation today. Guess what we talked about? Adoption, of course! It seems the whole world has either adopted or is interested in adoption. She heard that I had a daughter with two adopted children. She told me that she too was thinking about adopting and wanted to ask some questions.

I told her about you. I spoke about those difficult and painful days when you were trying to conceive. And then, our world changed and you came home with those beautiful children! Next I came to the part of which I never tire - bragging about the smartest, most talented, most beautiful grandchildren. I still can't believe how well they fit - without qualification - into our family, and their new life.

I was asked if it was a problem that the girls looked different. Also, how I felt at first and then today. As for looking different, the only difference I see when the grandchildren get together is that we have two more cousins to run, jump, and yell.

Finally, I tried to explain what it was like for me, a father to five daughters, and a grandpa to twelve grandchildren. I didn't know what to expect and how I would feel. Now, coming to your home and being greeted by the happy cries of "Pa! Pa!" gives me a feeling of love that only a grandchild could offer. All I could say was that those two little girls make us a very special family. How blessed I am to experience the love and laughter they've brought into our lives!
